You may ask why another cinema site? Well, as the saying goes "familiarity breeds contempt"! There are simply too many cinema sites that pander to the prevailing wisdom. Lately, a plethora that focus on the burgeoning television renaissance of great series. Netflix in particular has in the last year or two made massive inroads with quality TV.

But as a historian myself as well as a film fanatic, we will take the longer view. I will state here unashamedly that I believe as do many cinema historians that the greatest decade of cinema was the 1940s. So take the trip with us as we educate you on the great film noir film of the period and many other cinematic gems!

A prevailing aspect of our site will be films that are not nihilistic and depraved. Yes, there is room for edginess- myself and my partner Lena revere Netflix's "Bloodline" but we have no time for many horror films and especially "torture porn" horror like the "Saw" franchise! And we will enlighten you on beautiful foreign film like Tornatore's "Cinema Paradiso" - an Oscar winner, and Louis Malle's superb "Au Revoir Les Enfants" - Goodbye Children - a masterful treatise of haunting beauty of French children hiding a Jewish boy in Nazi occupied France!

Our site will also be unique because my partner Lena is a fashion designer and manufacturer of handbags. I come from the business world with a passion for history and literature. We have copious other interests as well which will make us different, irreverent, compelling and enlightening. I am also a burgeoning writer so for any other budding or professional writers out there we can learn and inspire each other!

Finally, we believe in humanity and humane behaviour! We will be inspiring and politically incorrect at times but always respectful of all! This is not a Trumpian world. All are welcome, all respected. As the motto behind one of our favourite shows of all time Star Trek states "infinite diversity in infinite combinations"- that is our prevailing moniker for our site!

So strap yourself in tight, put your thinking caps on and get ready for blast off in our great "celestial" cinema ride through the history of film! We welcome all input and ideas from all of you, as long as it's respectful and non-discriminatory!

JULIANE LORENZ INTERVIEW ON RAINER WERNER FASSBINDER!!

It is without doubt the case that Fassbinder is perhaps the most prolific major film director in film history! Rainer died far too young at the tender age of 37.In his short life he created 39 films in 15 years. His work although polarising, including for yours truly, contained several masterworks. Recently, I was fortunate enough to interview Juliane Lorenz, his partner for many years and also editor of many of his films. Juliane Lorenz radiated intelligence, warmth and love of films and it was a pleasure to interview her!!

Who were Rainer's influences?

Juliane: As some know he was a huge fan of Douglas Sirk and was fortunate to visit him in Lugano Switzerland where Sirk lived. It was a meeting of two incredible minds as you can imagine!

What makes such a brilliant mind tick?

Juliane: Rainer was a voracious reader and his mind just never stopped creating and envisioning ideas. As an only child he had a real attachment to books and he also loved going to the movies as a child!

I'm a huge fan of many of the great actors that Rainer worked with. Two specific favourites are Kurt Raab and Irm Hermann. How did he elicit such great performances from his actors?

Juliane: Well for the most part he worked with an ensemble of actors that provided continuity and also growth in terms of acting performance. Actors like Kurt and Irm were excellent actors and even with a great director one needs a certain level of acting talent to elevate a film.

Who were the formative influences in your career?

Juliane: My stepfather was short-film maker so i saw international films very early on. I watched Chaplin, Renoir and Visconti and also American B-Movies.

Lessons for aspiring filmmakers?

Juliane: Take your chance to watch films, then go and learn the craft. I had great luck meeting a master of cinema very early on. But still it wasn't all natural! It took seven years of working and living with Rainer, doing fourteen movies together!

I think Rainer is underappreciated as an actor. I love his laconic, often propulsive and hyperkinetic roles in his films. And I imagine he was as funny off screen as on! What were his interests?

Juliane: He was always a ball of energy! More than anything he loved football, like most German men. Rainer was a huge Bayern Munich man and his knowledge of players was encyclopaedic. He could recite or recall players from many, many years ago with his great memory.

Any thoughts on politics and the current world situation?

Well, there are negative influences like Trump and the rise of the radical Right in Europe. More than anything we must be activated to change things for the better. It's no good just to think "I’m not interested in politics".

It was an absolute pleasure to interview such an esteemed and kind lady of film repute! Look out for more interviews in the near future!

Deadpool

DEADPOOL 2! IT'S NOT "CASABLANCA" OR EVEN BLADE RUNNER BUT ITS RIOTOUS FUN!!

June 9th 2018

One of the surprise hits a few years back was the original Deadpool. Starring the always interesting Ryan Reynolds, a good looking actor with surprising depth it was funny, irreverent and wildly entertaining. I often approach sequels with trepidation as they usually don't match up to the originals. The recent Blade Runner sequel is an obvious exception. But I can say with enthusiasm that Deadpool 2 surpasses the original with extra effects. More laughs and added originality.

Sure, its ribald humour may offend the easily offended but it is all tongue in touch and the film has a beautiful, romantic touch as the Reynolds Wade pines after the lady of his dreams played by the ravishing Morena Baccarin. They are planning for children to complete their lives and then a surprising plot development occurs. As an aside she looks very much like my fiancé Lena! The movie has been a spectacular success already grossing over 360 million dollars US on a 100 million budget. Contrast that to the spectacular flop that is "Solo" the Star Wars movie -there can be too much of a good thing!

The difference between Deadpool and much of the Star Wars franchise is that the former is peppered with cultural references and satirical denouements of modern society whilst with respect Star Wars is a "poor man's" Star Trek! A delicious feature of the movie is the unexpected AOR soundtrack. I was singing along with bliss to classic '80s AOR staples like Pat Benatar's "We Belong", Cher’s, “If I Could Turn Back Time", A-HA's,"Take on Me" and "All Out of Love" by Air Supply.

All in all Deadpool 2 will not reinvent the wheel or the universe for that matter but it’s wildly entertaining and the fight scenes are tremendous. I’m not a fan of gratuitous violence - this isn't Michael Winner style "Death Wish" but cartoon choreographed violence....with a heart. One of my favourite actors Josh Brolin seems to relish playing a Marvel character in contrast to his usual serious dramatic roles and in Colossus played by Stefan Kapicic we have one of the cutest giants in cinema! Wonder Woman is still my fave "superhero" movie but Deadpool 2 is high on the list! And the quiet, family guy Ryan Reynolds who also co-wrote the movie ads another notch to his bright career! Watch and enjoy....and revel in the '80s AOR soundtrack!!
